JAXA designed and developed a full scale active flap system through the following three steps; 1)conceptual design, 2)engineering study including analytical dynamic evaluation and 3)bench tests evaluating static, dynamic and endurance performances. The conceptual design specifies the geometry of the active flap and the operational requirements to sufficiently reduce BVI noise generated during approach/landing. The target value of the active flap amplitude=6deg. is set for this purpose. The engineering study defines the components comprising the active flap system capable to achieve this target value and performs the system integration. The analytical dynamic evaluation is also carried out to confirm the nonexistence of structural and vibration problems. As the final step of this study, the bench tests are performed to validate the design methodology and evaluate operational capabilities of the active flap system. The test results show that the full scale active flap system achieved 6deg. amplitude at up to 27.5Hz on the simulated flight condition and that there are no problems after continuous 12-hour endurance operation.
