The term “road transport informatics” (RTI) is currently used in Europe to describe a broad range of information technologies and systems which can be used for various applications in the field of highway transportation. This paper describes progress on a major European study into the use of road transport informatics in implementing demand management policies. This is being performed by a multi-national consortium, led by Castle Rock Consultants, under contract to the European Community DRIVE (Dedicated Road Infrastructure for Vehicle Safety in Europe) program. DRIVE is a new $75 million research program which aims to improve road transportation efficiency, safety and environmental effects through use of RTI.
The study described involves investigation of the application of various RTI technologies to demand management measures such as road pricing, restrictive zoning and access control.
