THIS author suggests that despite the complexity of the lubrication problem, it can be reduced to various combinations of seven essential factors. Under the first, lubrication ability, he defines the term, pointing out that lack of lubrication leads to scuffing or galling of the surface with consequent mechanical abrasion. Cooling, another requirement, can be corrected mechanically.
Corrosion prevention is discussed as the third factor, and noise control through cushioning with a viscous fluid is considered as a fourth positive factor, those things which a lubricant must do. The other three are regarded as negative, those things which a lubricant must not do.
It must not oxidize or decompose of itself; it must not combine with other materials and form sludge; it must not change in viscosity.
