Goodrich Corporation (GR) has developed a dual-use Integrated Mechanical Diagnostic HUMS for rotorcraft applications. This system is currently being fielded for use on military and commercial helicopters. The Goodrich HUMS is based on a component oriented, reconfigurable, data-driven design with an integral commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) Windows based ground support station. The design philosophy presents both opportunities and challenges to meeting requirements outlined in the FAA certification process. The certification requirements challenge the HUMS developer to harness the tremendous explosion in processing flexibility and power as well as connectivity. The FAA Advisory Circular outlines an end-to-end process based on the criticality level of the functions performed by the HUMS as each relates to maintenance credits sought. The end-to-end process requires careful consideration as to the level of criticality and the level of integration of a supporting ground station. The use of COTS hardware and software in a ground station adds complexity to the process due to the difficulty in establishing, verifying and maintaining the baseline system on which the application will run.
