- This paper describes a complex surface development procedure from industrial design conception through production tooling acquisition, Emphasis is placed on utilizing state-of-the-art techniques to provide aesthetically pleasing and manufacturable products.Complex surface development and smoothing techniques are defined utilizing computer augmented design systems. A high performance graphic work station with local intelligence provides enhanced surface visualization, thereby reducing or eliminating costly and time-consuming physical clay modeling. FEM and die development analysis techniques are utilized to assure structural integrity and formability of components. Prototype and production manufacturing requirements are fulfilled using NC techniques. Procedures used for computer interface with vendor systems are explained. Computer data base integrity is maintained through computerized scanning of the die model should it be revised.
