This paper seeks to explore the application of thrust and lift compounding as a cost efficient development of the traditional helicopter. The principal deficiencies of the edgewise rotor are examined and the use of compounding to overcome these limitations and enhance rotorcraft capabilities, is developed. Potential missions suitable for the various types of compounding and the concept of a family of vehicles to cover a wide variety of applications are discussed. A possible technology demonstrator, based on a Lynx airframe and its build standards are described. Finally a list of overall conclusions are drawn.
