Local vibration targeting is the determination of optimal values for responses of individual components so that a desired change in the performance of the global structure is achieved. In this study, local vibration targeting is formulated as a design optimization problem to determine the target vibration characteristics of the individual components of the structure; with this approach, the modification of local components can be performed separately from the rest of the structure targeting. This formulation is accomplished with component mode synthesis, which describes the functional relationship between the vibration characteristics of the assembled structure and that of the local components. Examples are presented in this paper to facilitate the discussion of numerical implementation and to evaluate the performance of the proposed method.
