Authors Abstract
Content
The paper presents a detailed analysis of two limited slip differentials: on loading and unloading cone spin-resistant differentials practically with the same dimensions to be designed for a modern passenger car.
Analysis of advantages and disadvantages of both mechanisms in various driving conditions is carried out. As on outcome of the analysis, the superiority of the unloading cone spin-resistant differential is proved. The limited slip action of that mechanism has been determined to be the greatest one during the low torque condition. When good driving conditions prevail and when torque transmission is high, the unit functions almost equal to the conventional differential. The unloading cone spin-resistant differential reduces or eliminates wheel hop, undesirable lockup during high torque conditions or premature lockup with consequent loss of lateral stability evident in some driving conditions.
