This paper investigates alternate modular implementations of the digital moving map subsystem for the next generation aircraft avionics. The Pave Piller architecture is the baseline from which the common modules for the LHX, ATF, and ATA programs will be developed. The challenge for the advanced avionics developer in transforming an avionics function from custom LRU form to Pave Pillar modular form is to maintain performance without increases in size, weight, and power consumption that would nullify the desired life cycle cost gains. Three common module conceptual implementations of the digital moving map subsystem were developed based on the Vector Processor (VP) module set, the Array Processor (AP) module set, end a Post-Processor (PP) module set. The PP module set utilizes a combination of standard signal processing (common) modules and dedicated post processing (custom) modules within a centralized signal processor. Using state-of-theart technology, custom designed post-processors offer substantial size, weight, and power advantages over the programmable VP or AP common modules.
