Authors Abstract
Content
The purpose of the paper is to coordinate driving and collision dynamics into a unified system in order to formulate better design and operational criteria. The paper's thesis is that only the critical pursuit of all the relationships dictated by these dynamics can lead to better traffic systems, particularly for tanker trucks.
The paper establishes mechanical models for heavy trucks. Dynamic analyses of the degrees of freedom for different vehicle types lead to approximate methods for modeling the differing accident processes. Such modeling provides means for theoretical treatment of the propagation of these processes once they exceed the limits of driver control. The influence of driving speed is demonstrated with particular attention given to the increase in risk of potentially uncontrollable situations. The results are used to critique prevalent highway safety provisions, many of which are found to be useless in most heavy vehicle accidents
