Authors Abstract
Content
The author presents the heat equation for combined radiation and conduction transfer, applied to a plane stratified absorbing-emitting medium. Two special cases are discussed. In the first case, the solution for the temperature profile around an opaque hollow sphere is presented. The sphere is subject to external radiation; it has arbitrary conductance and variable surface optical properties. This case shows the individual and combined effects of the conductance parameter, μ, and the surface radiative properties, absorptance and emittance.
The second case concerns temperature profile and heat transfer through a layer of solid condensed gas. Here the temperature profile shows that effect of volume absorption is much like that of a distributed heat source. The author also discusses the diffusion approximation and some recent modifications to include conduction.
