- With the growth of global communication demand, multi-layer Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation has become an important part of the next generation network. The multi-layer hybrid constellation can effectively improve the coverage performance and network connectivity through the cooperative work of satellites with different orbital heights. In this paper, a dynamic model of constellation topology is established for multi-layer LEO constellations. The index system of coverage and networking is constructed by using the strategy of fixed neighbor inter-satellite link (ISL) in the same layer and the nearest neighbor dynamic inter-layer link (ILL) between layers. Through simulation, the performance of single-layer and multi-layer constellation configurations is compared. The influence of design parameters such as orbital altitude, number of ILLs and inter-layer satellite resource allocation on the indexes of multi-layer constellation is analyzed. The simulation results show that the multi-layer constellation is superior to the single-layer constellation in terms of coverage continuity and network capacity with a fixed total number of satellites. As the number of ILLs increases from 1 to 5, the average shortest path length (ASPL) and the average inter-satellite propagation delay decrease, and the network capacity is significantly improved. Reasonable inter-layer resource allocation and link configuration can effectively improve the networking performance of multi-layer constellations.
