Authors Abstract
Content
Even for modern diesel engines the conditions during the cold start are far from normal operation. Only cold start aids like glow plugs and intake air heaters guarantee at ambient temperatures below 263 K a reliable start and pollutant emission levels meeting the EC 2000 regulations. BERU glow plugs effect -selfregulating or electronically controlled- a cold start comparable to gasoline engines with a extreme good durability. The latest glow plug development opens a wide range of combustion process control via ion current sensing. Electric intake air heaters support the cold start process in a wide displacement range. Intake manifold burners are applied to large displacement engines and at arctic temperatures.
