- Inhibition of coking from pyrolysis of hydrocarbon fuel is critical for ensuring the safe operation of high-speed aircraft. In this work, the inhibitory effects of dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) on coke during the supercritical pyrolysis of n-decane were investigated. Experiments using an electrically heated micro-reactor tube were conducted to study the influences of presulfidation and cofeeding methods with varying DMDS concentrations. The pyrolysis products were analyzed via gas chromatography, while pressure drop and coke mass were measured. The composition and morphology of coke were further characterized by energy-dispersive spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The results show that the influence of DMDS on coke formation depends on its application method and concentration. At a DMDS concentration of 500 ppm, the coke inhibition rate reached 85.5% with presulfidation and 81.7% with cofeeding. However, with increasing DMDS concentration beyond 500 ppm, the amount of coke formation increases. Coke formation during supercritical pyrolysis of n-decane primarily involves metal-catalyzed coking and bulk-phase coking processes. The H2S and HS radicals generated from pyrolysis of DMDS react with transition metals such as Fe and Ni, thereby inhibiting the formation of metal-catalyzed filamentous coke. The presulfidation process forms a sulfide layer earlier than the cofeeding process, more effectively suppressing the generation of filamentous coke. However, excessively high DMDS concentrations can lead to its decomposition into sulfur-containing radicals such as thiol radicals (CH3S·), which incorporate into the coke matrix, enhance its reactivity, and promote coke formation. This work offers valuable insights for the application of DMDS as a coke inhibitor in endothermic hydrocarbon fuels.
