THE various characteristics of propellers for turboprop airplanes are discussed here in view of the present requirements and design knowledge.
Since there is general agreement on expected aerodynamic performance of propellers for the various categories of turboprop aircraft, the important design phases of combined propeller and engine controls and the factors affecting the structural integrity of the propeller comprise the major portion of the discussion.
In the next few years, there will be a substantial number of new turboprop installations, which will require full understanding of interrelated airplane, engine, and propeller design problems to ensure their successful operation.
In the main part, the material is presented from the propeller viewpoint; however, considerable attention is devoted to specific propeller functions and structural items that stem directly from engine and airplane requirements.
