In this paper we describe the development of a hybridized tappet which involves a ceramic shim which is in direct contact with the camshaft. After a quick description of the component's implantation and design, we will focus on the problem of choosing the ceramic material.
All the qualification tests performed to validate this application will then be described.
The work that has been performed to enhance durability and reliability of the ceramic part will then be pointed out.
The goal of the study was to develop a ceramic tappet which would allow, by withstanding higher loads, an increase of the ZPJ4 engine reliability. The decision was taken, on the first of October 1991, to apply the hybridized tappet to the top-of-the-range Peugeot 605 and Citroën XM cars.
