- One very important source of aircraft-impacting turbulence in the atmosphere is the breaking of gravity (buoyancy) waves, which may occur at any altitude from the lower troposphere to the upper stratosphere. This paper describes the three dynamic mechanisms responsible for such breakdown, and the atmospheric conditions under which they are liable to operate.
