This paper describes the fundamental principles applied to the control of speed and/or fuel to prime movers with special emphasis applied to electrical generating equipment. The primary objective is to illustrate the numerous features and benefits of electric governor systems versus hydro-mechanical systems. The use and application of electronic (including digital) systems to prime movers will increase greatly over the next few years, and this paper is intended to provide a basis for a better understanding of these systems.
