Integration of complex avionics systems into the crew workload intensive environment of the helicopter is a challenge to the Systems Engineer. The Collins Government Avionics Division (CGAD) of Rockwell International has developed a unique set of “tools” specifically designed for the helicopter environment. These integration tools form the “core” of various complex systems performing a variety of tasks. The core avionics system recognizes that a common thread of crew interface and control exists, regardless of the specific mission requirement or specific hardware required. In the typical helicopter, the command and control issue is particularly critical in light of the relatively small space available, the typical weight restrictions imposed, and the already high workload imposed in flying the helicopter itself.
