An Approach to the Design of Spur and Helical Gears

Engineers and designers without years of experience in the field are often not prepared to cope with the present complicated and confusing system of gear design and rating. The results are often standard designs which do not make the best use of space available. This paper presents a simplified design procedure which will yield gear designs that make more efficient use of space. The resulting designs may not be standard gears, but can usually be generated with standard cutting tools.
