Abstract
Content

Advances in materials and material processing technologies are being implemented in small gas turbine engines to provide improvements in performance, durability, reduction of cost and weight. Advancements in turbine and compressor disk materials have been incorporated in current designs to reduce weight and increase life. Turbine airfoils have been improved in performance and durability and continuing alloy development promises further increases. Ceramics and composites are also being introduced into current engines. Advanced high specific stiffness metallic shaft materials offer potential for higher rotor speeds and transmitted loads. The status of these material technologies is presented in this paper and engine system benefits are described.
