The theater missile threat, notably theater ballistic missiles (TBM), continues to increase as these weapons systems proliferate among a growing number of countries. The AH-64A Apache attack helicopter proved effective in Theater Missile Defense (TMD) Attack Operations during the Roving Sands Advanced Warfighting Exercise (AWE) held in 1995. Improvements to the AH-64D Apache Longbow significantly enhance the attack helicopter’s capability in this role. The most appropriate mission for Apache Longbow is most likely pre-planned attack of suspected TBM locations. However, Apache Longbow is also well suited to perform on-call and rapid response attack missions. Two enabling technologies, remote sensors and digital communications, have matured which further enhance Apache Longbow attack operations against TBM sites. Aircraft systems capabilities, digital communications, cost benefits when compared to other alternatives, and precision accuracy of weapons systems makes Apache Longbow a highly lethal and survivable option in TMD attack operations.
