A series of aerobatic flight tests were conducted on an instrumented Army AH-64D, Apache Longbow helicopter. Comparisons of aerobatic flight loads to normal fleet flight loads were conducted and fatigue damage rates compared. An aerobatic agility demonstration was successfully completed with an unmodified Apache Longbow helicopter. Maneuvers demonstrated for the aerobatic show include a roll, loop, double loop, hammerhead, split S, bow, and rearward flight/vertical pitch recovery with 180 degree roll. A comparison of aerobatic flight load severity to normal fleet spectrum usage is also presented. Safety Note The aerobatic flight strain survey was conducted within the US Army operational envelope of the Apache Longbow with the exception of the 30/60 degree pitch and roll limitations. The build up and demonstration were conducted by trained experimental test pilots qualified to expand the flight envelope of the aircraft. Both pilots hold Unrestricted Letters of Aerobatic Competency from the FAA allowing them to legally perform aerobatic demonstrations. Unauthorized operation of the Apache Helicopter outside US Army flight manual limits is not recommended by Boeing. Failure to comply with flight manual restrictions may cause property damage, injury, or death.
