Authors Abstract
Content
A new sand cast magnesium alloy, AMC-SC1, suitable for use in powertrain applications has been developed by the Australian Magnesium Corporation (AMC). The alloy is based on the Mg-rare earth system, and it is intended that it be used in a fully heat-treated T6 condition. The creep and bolt load retention behaviours are comparable to those of aluminium A319 in the 150°C - 177°C temperature range. The alloying process has been selected to obtain a cost competitive high temperature magnesium alloy. This paper reports on the physical and mechanical properties of the alloy, and relates these to the properties required for a specific engine block design.
