Authors Abstract
Content
This paper outlines the history and present operations of the Air Transport Command. Reasons why air transport is required in war and in peace are mentioned. A discussion is given of the major factors required to assure air transport growth, together with Air Transport Command experiences in relation to these factors. Pertinent details of Air Transport Command accident rates are shown. The general conclusion is reached that low cost per ton mile is of primary importance to aircraft manufacturers, commercial operators, and the military. The paper closes on the note that we should not be complacent with regard to our present development of transport aircraft, operational procedures and maintenance.
