Rotor blade erosion has become a more significant factor in the cost of maintaining the helicopter fleet because of increasing tip speeds and nap-of-the-earth flight. Data that identify and quantify the parameters influencing the erosion process are used to design a new erosion test stand that more accurately simulates the erosion environment encountered in flight. The parameters that have been controlled in the test are airfoil shape, tip speed, angle of attack, sand cloud, and rain field. A comparison to actual rain erosion experienced in flight is provided. Sand erosion comparisons have not yet been possible, but preliminary indications are promising.
