The requirements for increased safety and comfort in todays passenger cars have been increased constantly over the last years.
Related to front wiper systems, especially noise, wipe angle accuracy and styling are becoming more and more important. Parallel to this, the size and format of the windscreens changed towards larger size and more square forms. Linked to this development there is also a trend towards the usage of butterfly systems which allows the wiper system designers to fulfill the specific legal requirements such as ECE and SAE.
An innovative answer to this trend can be seen in the development of reversible front wiper motors. The main drivers for this technology, beside other benefits, are shown in Figure1.

This tremendous increase in terms of features is based on the development of a new generation of front wiper motors. This motors are fully electronized and the main difference to a standard motor can be seen in the oscillating movement of the motor crank. Due to a speed closed-loop concept/control based on the use of contactless Hall sensors, the angle of the motor crank movement is programmable in a certain range and gives the designer the chance to optimize the performance of the wiper system for each car.
Especially for Europe, there are three main drivers for this kind of technology:
  1. 1.
Packaging advantages in the engine compartment
  2. 2.
    Depressed park position
  3. 3.
Improved wipe angle accuracy under all driving conditions
