- An industrially-sponsored, multiyear research program entitled Advanced Powder Processing has been initiated at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The early research focus is on binder-assisted processing of metal, ceramic, and intermetallic powders and their composites, principally by injection molding. The research program is uniquely muitidisciplinary, involving materials science, powder processing, polymer processing, computer-aided design and analysis, and process and quality control. The research intends to provide a foundation for the fabrication of affordable components with complex geometries, close tolerances, unique microstructures and improved properties. near net-shape. To assure broader application of paniculate materials processing techniques, the program will produce both innovative technology and new technologists.
