Mercedes Benz is forging ahead with the electrification of the power train in all performance classes and across all model series from the start/stop system right up to the full hybrid vehicle. The S 400 HYBRID thus constitutes the first Mercedes-Benz hybrid. Equipped with the features of a start/stop system as well as regenerative braking and electrical drive support, it achieves a reduction in fuel consumption of approximately 20%. The goal in terms of packaging was to prevent any impairment of customer benefit. The design of the components and the selection of standard installation spaces allowed all the components specific to the hybrid system to be accommodated in the front end. In this respect, the battery technology used played a special role, because by using a lithium-ion battery for the first time in the world in a passenger car, it was possible to design the hybrid battery so that it was no larger than a conventional starter battery, and would also fit in the installation space of the latter.
