The traditional Transonic Unsteady Rotor Navier-Stokes (TURNS) code, which uses high order MUSCL-type limiting for the reconstruction, is modified by using a piecewise quadratic reconstruction with high order compact difference evaluations of nodal derivatives. As a result, the inherent numerical diffusion of the TURNS code is significantly reduced. The application of this modified TURNS code to simulate the long-term 2-D convection of a vortex in a free-stream indicates that with only 4 points across the vortex core, the vortex can be convected for 200 core radii with less than 10 percent decay in the peak-to-peak vertical velocity across the vortex core. Even after imposing Suresh’s monotone constraints, this 3rd order scheme still preserves the peak value better than a previous unlimited 5th order scheme. Further, the numerical simulation of parallel blade-vortex interaction indicates that the modified TURNS code can preserve the vortex structure and the acoustic waves much better than the current TURNS code.
