Authors Abstract
Content
This paper discusses the possible signal distortions that can occur from accelerometers when they are subjected to forces greater than their calibrated range that are at frequencies above their bandwidth. The sources of these unwanted inputs and the sensor mechanism that causes them to distort the output signal will first be presented. Examples of a simple distortion will be given to clarify how this happens. This analysis will lead to tradeoffs in accelerometer electrical performance and the way they are mechanical mounted which can reduce the unwanted effects. Finally, recommended testing procedures will be given to test for robustness in the final system.
