- The paper illustrates the improvement in performance that can be obtained by fitting a variable–geometry turbocharger turbine to a highly–rated truck diesel engine. Since a simple pneumatic control system does not produce either best fuel economy or fastest response on such a highly–rated engine, a microprocessor–based control system has been developed. This system attempts to provide optimum response with minimum exhaust smoke, whilst maintaining good steady–state fuel economy and using the minimum number of sensors. The control strategy is described in detail and both steady–speed and transient engine test results are shown.
