A Unique Approach to the Development of a Light Helicopter Automatic Flight Control System

The requirements and implementation of the Enstrom Cruise-A-Long flight control system are described. This includes a review of the need for better helicopter stability, in terms of pilot work load, and separation of maneuverability from stability.

The flight control system configuration is defined with block diagrams, hardware implementation, actuation analysis, and failure monitoring. System interface with aircraft performance characteristics, along with flight test results, are highlighted.
