The modeling of slats and flaps with a panel method such as VSAERO presents problems in the cove regions. The potential flow simulation is not capable of modeling the actual cove, so a representation of the separation streamline must be used.
MSES is a 2-d Euler analysis program that has been shown to provide very good results for multi-element airfoils. Part of the solution includes calculating the separation streamline in the cove.
This paper discusses the successes of using the MSES solution to specify the separation streamline for a VSAERO model with deflected slats and flaps.
