Implementing diagnostic functionality in automotive ECUs is usually an expensive, time-consuming and inefficient process. Computer-generated source code based on ECU-specific diagnostic data can dramatically decrease costs and development time and increase quality and efficiency.
By considering the weaknesses in the typical ECU diagnostic development process, a clear set of objectives emerges. Defining a source code generation system that addresses these weaknesses lays the groundwork for implementing a successful solution. A case study using the Vector CANdesc (CAN Diagnostic Embedded Software Component) is presented as a proof of concept.
