In manual transmission units, taper roller bearing preload is vital factor for enhancing the durability and performance. To achieve better optimization of bearing preload, precise measurement method is a minimum requisite. This technical paper investigates the multiple methods and develops a novel methodology for accurate bearing preload measurement, overcoming the challenges produced by the complexity of transmission designs. The study also identifies key parameters responsible for influencing bearing preload, including rigidity & fit of the parts involved. A comprehensive experimental study at part level & system level was done to quantify the effects of these parameters on preload levels and transmission performance. Furthermore, the paper explores the effect of bearing preload optimization on durability as well as efficiency of transmission unit. In conclusion, this paper contributes a systematic approach to bearing preload measurement in manual transmission units. By enhancing measurement accuracy and understanding the influence of key parameters, optimization between transmission reliability & efficiency can be achieved to meet the rigorous demands in modern automotive applications.
