A Look at Winches for Utility Vehicles

A brief history of truck winches is presented in this paper. Various types of conventional worm and gear winches available today are reviewed with comments on the performance of each type. Mention is made of several recently introduced electric and hydraulic drive winches. Constant load winches are discussed. An indication of future winches is presented along with their probable improved features. The importance of filling users’ requirements in present and future winch arrangements is stressed.
