A Look at European Developments in Truck Transmissions

The object of this paper is to review developments taking place in Europe on truck transmission design. The existing design principles used in synchronized mechanical transmissions are reassessed. A new approach where the main emphasis is given to synchronizer duty is described.

The paper also discusses the logical extension of the use of stepped transmissions into semiautomatic versions and the possibilities of stepless transmissions.
