- This paper represents a continued investigation to demonstrate the potential benefits of ceramic materials for advanced diesel engine technology. Monolithic ceramic piston and cylinder liner components were fabricated from sintered alpha silicon carbide and sialon. Friction performance was evaluated in a 2-stroke, opposed piston diesel engine. Ceramic components operated without cylinder cooling or lubrication exhibited significantly lower friction than standard metal components with lubrication. Test results will be discussed in terms of operating conditions and component design.
