This paper deals with the virtual simulation study of 4-stoke, Single cylinder, Spark Ignition, Extended Expansion Lean Burn Engine. Engine processes are virtually simulated using thermodynamic and global modeling techniques. In the virtual simulation study, the compression, combustion, and expansion are considered. Submodels are used to the include effect of gas exchange process, heat transfer and friction.
Extended Expansion Engine operates on Otto-Atkinson cycle. Late Intake Valve Closure (LIVC) technique is used to control the load. The Atkinson cycle has larger expansion ratio than compression ratio. This is achieved by increasing the geometric compression ratio and employing LIVC. Virtual simulation result of the above engine shows that there is an increase in thermal efficiency up to a certain limit of Intake valve closure timing. There is also a good improvement in combustion efficiency. The virtual findings were graphically represented at end.
