Previous studies have shown that a large portion of helicopter pilots suffer from back pain resulting from flying. The pain has generally been confined to the lower back and, prior to any chronic symptoms developing, can be described as a dull ache. The problem drew more attention after extended missions required during Desert Shield/Desert Storm. This pain could have an adverse impact on operational readiness, crew effectiveness, and flight safety. Poor posture has been cited as the major contributing factor in pilot lower back pain. Most researchers attribute the low back pain in helicopter pilots to three factors: seated posture, vibration, and workload.
