Authors Abstract

"Our company RMS recycles used brake pads and linings as well as production scrap (including grinding dust); The friction material is turned into a friction base material which closes the cycle and is re-used in friction formulations. The metal (backing plates, shims etc.) are recycled as clean scrap. Resources and waste can be saved, reducing the environmental impact. With sustainability being the topic of our generation, we offer a way to re-use friction materials instead of throwing them away. I could describe the process, how much CO? can be saved, present research about this topic etc. We work with almost all major friction manufactures and several OEMs here in Europe. I could send information upfront (scetch showing the recycling loop etc.) if of interest. I discussed this with Michael Schorn with whom I worked for many years, we both think that this topic makes sense at the SAE as it combines technical background and data with the megatrend sustainability; Discs and calipers are being recycled for a long time, but the friction material is usually simply thrown away instead of re-using it."
