"Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) have some problems such as reduced cruising range during operating heating with electric heaters, insufficient heating performance, and icing of outer heat exchanger at low ambient temperatures. The reason why the heating performance is insufficient is that the current refrigerant (R134 a, R1234yf) for automotive air-conditioning systems is not always suitable for the heat pump system at low ambient temperatures. Objectives of this study are as follows: to propose a thermal management system for both cabin comfort and onboard equipment using a new secondary loop system, to ensure heating performance at low ambient temperatures, to solve the icing problem of outer heat exchanger, and to improve the range of BEVs at low ambient temperatures. The new secondary loop thermal management system (SL-TMS) uses a conventional R1234yf refrigerant as the primary fluid and a conventional ethylene glycol mixed with water as the secondary fluid. Results of this study are expected to ensure heating performance at low ambient temperatures, to achieve both cabin comfort and optimal temperature control of automotive equipment (battery, power electronics, etc.), to solve the icing problem of outer heat exchanger, and to improve the cruising range of BEVs at low ambient temperatures.
