Enabling a Digital Engineering Strategy requires a holistic approach to weapons system development. No longer can a weapons system simply be acquired and maintained with the expectation of game-changing results. To support priorities like directed energy and hypersonics, a new method of development is needed. To kick off the Digital Transformation and begin to capture the expectations set forth in the Digital Engineering Strategy the data silos and methods of the past need to be blown up. An integrated knowledge and data management platform is needed to capture the source of truth no matter where it is developed or what tool was used. With this approach, data is duplication is eliminated, decision-making is accelerated and enhanced, and the full lifecycle traceability of the system is enabled. A platform approach will provide needed flexibility for the individual commands to maintain uniqueness and innovate, yet provide openness and integration capability to share information and communication across the service(s). Efficiency and technical excellence are supported on the platform by empowering the Commands to custom tailor their models, methods, and tools to focus on the mission goals while guaranteeing maintainability and upgradeability. We will illustrate the platform approach to system development that integrates requirements management, systems engineering, simulation, and maintenance. In each step, we will include examples of industry-standard tools like MBSE/SysML, CAD, 3D FEA, etc. as well as the use of captured IoT data. Our presentation will provide examples of how to use the integrated platform to deploy a rapid development greenhouse environment, agile R&D, design space exploration, and supply chain integration.
