According to NHTSA, there were 891 vehicle recalls in the United States in 2025, affecting approximately 29 million vehicles; 71 electric vehicle recalls affecting more than 1 million vehicles, and 6 Autonomous Driving System (ADS) recalls (and a total of 13 ADS recall since 2022). Furthermore, Warranty Week reports that Worldwide Auto Manufacturers allocated a total of $72.5 billion for future warranty repairs or $50 – $7,100 per vehicle sold in 2024. 2025 Consumer Report indicates that Electrical Vehicles have more reliability issues than ICE vehicles. The product recalls, warranty and reliability issues not only impact the financial aspect of a company but also influence customer satisfaction, brand reputation, and market competitiveness. Therefore, reliability can position a company as a leader across various industry sectors.

This course is developed for practicing engineers. The class will focus on the integration of reliability into product development for autonomous vehicles and electric vehicles. The integrated five-step reliability process covers: Define the Requirements, Design to the Requirements, Verify to the Requirements, Launch to the Requirements and Manufacture to the Requirements.
