This course introduces the foundations of Model-Based Definition (MBD) and its role in building a Model-Based Enterprise (MBE). Learners progress from core MBD concepts and industry standards through human- vs. machine-readable MBD and interactive viewables, to how MBD functions within an enterprise via persistent data and digital thread, interoperable technical data and data packages, and the common challenges and success factors of digital transformation. The course combines lecture, discussion points, knowledge checks, and hands-on activities.

  • Define Model-Based Definition (MBD), focusing on its core elements and how it compares to 2D drawings and 3D CAD
  • Recognize key industry standards for model-based definition (MBD) and model-based enterprise (MBE)
  • Differentiate human-readable vs. machine-readable MBD and explain why both are required for effective enterprise communication and automation
  • Demonstrate how to review MBD using lightweight viewables (e.g., 3DPDF/HTML)
