Abstract
Content

There are two recognized sets of standards that govern the application and understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T): ASME Y14.5 and the ISO-GPS system. Confusion or assumptions that occur when moving between ASME and ISO standards can lead to costly issues that compromise quality, create delays, or necessitate additional work. Understanding both is critical to avoid issues and errors that may arise in global design and manufacturing environments.

This course facilitates an understanding of the fundamental differences between the GD&T standards set out in ASME Y14.5 and the ISO-GPS system. By understanding these differences, an engineer trained in either ASME Y14.5 or ISO-GPS can be empowered to efficiently navigate between the standards.

Learning Objectives
Content
By attending this class, you will be able to:
  • Explain how ASME and ISO GD&T standards are developed
  • Analyze the advantages and cautions of using ASME and ISO GD&T standards
  • Compare the major differences in technical drawing presentation
  • Distinguish the major differences in ASME and ISO tolerancing terms
  • Evaluate the major differences between ASME and ISO datum systems
  • Differentiate between ASME and ISO geometric tolerancing symbols
  • Interpret the differences in ASME and ISO drawings
Who Should Attend
Content

Mechanical Engineers, Product Designers, Manufacturers, or Quality Professionals should understand the differences and similarities to design and produce uniformly high-quality products.

Prerequisites
Content

An understanding of either ASME Y14.5 or the ISO-GPS set of standards is required.

While not a replacement for an in-depth education in either standard, this course complements the previously learned skills of industry professionals by supplying them with the tools required to utilize both standards in an ever-changing international market.
