Steel, Bars and Forgings 5.0Cr - 1.3Mo - 0.5V - (0.38 - 0.43C)
- Aerospace Material Specification
- AMS6488H
- Cancelled
Scope
This specification covers a low-alloy steel in the form of bars, forgings, and forging stock.
These products have been used typically for parts requiring a steel capable of through-hardening to a minimum hardness of 50 HRC in section thicknesses up to 12 inches (305 mm) with relatively high levels of strength, fatigue resistance, ductility, and thermal stability in service from -100 degrees to +1000 degrees F (-73 degrees to +538 degrees C), but usage is not limited to such applications.
Certain design and processing procedures may cause these products to become susceptible to stress-corrosion cracking after heat treatment; SAE ARP 1110 recommends practices to minimize such conditions.

Issuing Committee
AMS E Carbon and Low Alloy Steels Committee
The committee of Carbon and Low Alloy Steels, AMS Committee E, shall prepare, coordinate, and revise documents related to carbon and low alloy steels technology, such as steel cleanliness and steel quality assurance sampling, through the participation of metals suppliers, users, and interested government agencies. Committee activities shall provide a forum for the cooperative interchange of ideas and experience of the participants, resulting in the publication of specifications that embody sound, established aerospace industry practices and requirements to serve the suppliers and customers of aerospace materials.
