Abstract

A technological overview of several historical X-series experimental aircraft.

Many of the technologies used in today's modern aircraft were the result of many aerospace engineers' efforts over the years in the design and development of early experimental aircraft such as those found in the X-series. Much understanding was gained in the areas of aerodynamics, aircraft control, materials, and propulsion. Aerodynamic technologies such as supersonic and hypersonic flight, variable swept wings, forward swept wings, and laminar flow control were explored with these aircraft. Experimental vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft were used to explore aircraft control and propulsion. Work with these experimental vehicles also contributed to the aerospace industry's knowledge and experience with ballistic missiles, launch vehicles, and spacecraft. The continued growth in this series of experimental aircraft will lead to many new innovative technologies for future vehicles.
