Based on Volvo's new P2 platform, which spawned the S80 and the new V70 series, the S60 was engineered to create a nimble, quick, and distinctively Scandinavian performance-based sedan.

With its sloping rooflines (mirroring that of the C70 Coupe) and a short rear section, Volvo's S60 gives the visual impression of a coupe, but offers seating for five. Insiders at Volvo refer to the S60 as a “Safety + Sporty” sedan (they call the S80 a “Safety + Luxury” sedan and the new V70 a “Safety + Versatility” wagon).

The passenger compartment is pushed forward to create an aggressive “take the road” stance, much like today's S80 and V70. The S60's sloping roofline and C-pillar echo those of the C70 Coupe. Drag had been reduced (compared with the S70), from .32 to .28 Cd.
